*** This is the first day of a two day class that takes place on November 13th & 20th.***
To attend this class please register below. Unfortunately, it isn’t possible to attend class on a single day out of a series.
Are you a garment maker who’s curious about quilting but not ready to dive in headfirst? Or maybe you’re a quilter who has too many quilts and is looking for another way to display your piecing? Quilted vests are a wonderful way to combine both arts to create a truly unique garment without feeling overwhelmed with new techniques. Depending on your skill background, you can include a quilt block, piecing or yardage.
If you’ve never quilted before, the easiest way to start is by using yardage with a fun print. You will learn the basics of making a “quilt sandwich” and sewing all the layers together.
If you’ve done some quilting, you can incorporate a quilt block into the back of your vest. Vest size will determine how large a block you can use, but it should be about 8-12 inches finished.
If you’ve done a lot of quilting, you can piece larger sections such as the pockets or even the entire vest.
On the first day of class we will discuss batting types, quilting techniques and answer any questions about which vest type is best for your skill set – quilt block, piecing or yardage. We will start quilting our vests and making bias tape; if you don’t finish during class, that will be your homework to complete before day two.
On the second day we will sew our vests together using bias tape to achieve a beautiful seam finish that will allow your vest to be reversible. We will cover how to finish your binding by hand and machine as well as how to keep your seam allowances smooth and flat. Construction techniques for quilted jackets will be discussed as well.
