Sustainability in our lives is an important concern today. One aspect of this involves extending garment life and diverting textile waste from landfills, which conserves resources, reduces pollution, and lowers carbon emissions. The act of creating something new out of something old can be a rewarding and creative experience. We will be creating a unique tote bag made out of recycled garments.
You will need a few old garments to cut up and use as fabric for this project. Old jeans and cargo pants work well for this project, but any heavy weight woven garment will be workable. If you do not have old garments to upcycle already in your stash, consider rescuing some from a secondhand shop.
Upcycling the process of reusing discarded objects or materials in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original.
SKILL LEVEL: ADVANCED BEGINNER
PREREQUISITE: Sewing 101 or equivalent experience.
You should have previous machine sewing experience and have completed a few projects using different types of fabric. Previous hand sewing experience will be helpful when it comes to embellishing your bag. Please email erin@pacificfabrics.com if you are unsure if your skill level is appropriate.
