A Remembering Quilt for Regis Philbin

Posted by pacificfabrics on Monday, October 24th, 2011

We received a wonderful picture from Helen, one of our customer friends, last week and we thought you would enjoy it. Helen lives in New Jersey, but shops in the Everett store once a month when she visits her son and daughter-in-law and the staff all looks forward to seeing her each month!

Here's the picture and the story from Helen herself:

My sister has been going to Regis Philbin's show for years and, when I moved to NJ, I went a few times, too. Since my sister was getting tickets for us for the show, I asked her for information about Regis - who his friends were and what kinds of things are most important to him. Then I searched the show web site, Facebook page and YouTube for pictures and spent two weeks working on the computer collages for the quilt.

I purchased the American Valor fabrics from the Everett store and on the Pacific Fabrics web site, then bought football, baseball and shamrock fabrics at Everett to finish the design. My sister found out on September 30th that the Regis and Kelly tickets would be for the October 4th show, so I also worked on the quilt on my flight from WA to NJ on October 2nd. I got in at midnight, cut out the fabric for the design, printed out the collages on fabric, slept for a few hours, finished the quilt and left on the 4:30 am train on the 4th to go to the show.

I was so excited about my Remembering Quilt for Regis that I thought it was worth trying to get a chance to give it to him myself. As you can see I was successful! Fortunately, the Regis and Kelly staff were so excited about my quilt that they taped me presenting the quilt and talking to Regis and Kelly about the photos I used.

I had never quilted before this year, so this was a very exciting way to start - very different from the Science and Math I taught for 35 years! The few quilters I have talked to suggest fancier things I could do, but I like to keep it simple so it remains 100% washable. Many of the quilts I make go to residents of nursing homes and I am currently working on collages for four Veteran families. I don't take pictures of those to protect their privacy.
