A Tulle Tulip Skirt for Anna-Beth

Posted by pacificfabrics on Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Since Anna-Beth said that she has no costumes for Halloween, I decided that she would look lovely in a dreamy tulle skirt. Not just any tulle skirt, but one that is shaped like a flower.

Tulle Tulip Skirt

For my project I used:

  • 3 yards of 6 colors of tulle (for a child's size, you will use 2 yards)
  • Rotary cutter (but scissors work too, its just faster and cleaner cuts)
  • Rotary mat (not needed if you are using scissors)
  • Approximately 1 yard of elastic (whatever is comfortable for your waist)
  • A piece of large paper (I used old Christmas wrapping paper)
  • Optional: 1.5 yards of coordinating ribbons trims, as many as you want to use

Here's how you do it:

Cutting the petals
I chose to make each of the "strips" into petal shapes but straight strips work too. Draw your design on the white side of the paper and cut out. (I folded my design in half and glued together it to make the paper thicker) Cut your tulle into one yard pieces. Fold into quarters with the fold at the top. Lay your paper template on top of the tulle and Rotary cut next to the paper design.

Cut Petal Strips
Its ok if you cut a little of the paper off the edge, it will not hurt your rotary cutter and each petal does not need to be exactly the same.

Elastic Circle
Sew your elastic into a loop size that is comfortable for who is going to be wearing it. Now you are ready to begin looping your tulle over the elastic.

1st step of looping
Taking the center fold of your tulle lay it on top of the elastic.

2nd step looping

3rd step looping
Turn the loop under the elastic and pull the petal shape through.

snugging up loop
Snug up the knot.

several loops
Repeat until the elastic is full.  For added fun and design, try adding ribbons. Just loop them over the elastic as you did the tulle.

  • Since making the tutu and blog post, many of my friends and coworkers are making their tulle skirts too. I am so flattered/tickled/pleased/thrilled that everyone is enjoying this simple design.
