Coming Out of the Quilting Closet

Although, I have been sewing clothes for many years, I have only sewn whole cloth or "cheater" quilt panels before. But, when our latest granchild was about to be born, I wanted to make a pieced quilt. Being the over-acheiver of the family, I picked what I loved and thought might be easy -the Surprise! Quilt pattern from Karie Patch Designs that we carry in our stores. I took a class at the Everett store, where I work, featuring this pattern and you can see the results above! My husband is interested in quilting and has his own long-arm machine, so he quilted it for me. It was truly a family affair! The pattern uses 12 - 13 fat quarters and novelty prints to create cute "surprise" blocks. I hid a different novelty print that I thought my new grandchild would enjoy under the prarie points of each block. Look at that seafaring puppy! Isn't the block just darling?!
It was a big hit, as you can see. My grand-daughter loves showing her new baby brother how the prarie points open up. I love it more than I can say. Now I know why quilters are so addicted to what they do! ~ Pat |
